Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 53
Site Description: Site 5MF6065 is a historic trash scatter located on a gently sloping south - facing
hill top on the divide between two unnamed intermittent drainages that flow south from the crest of
a broad ridge between Morgan Gulch and Box Elder Gulch (Figure 6.15). It lies at 7,010 ft
(2,137 m), and the location commands a good view of the surrounding ridgeline, as well as the ridge
and drainage system to the west, south, and east. The general area is characterized by
northeast - trending ridges separated by gulches (Figure 6.16). Soils consist of fine- grained silty sands
with residual gravels. Vegetation on -site is comprised of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, prickly pear cactus,
cheatgrass, other grasses, and forbs. The site has been impacted by livestock grazing.
The artifact assemblage consists of 13 matchstick filler solder -dot evaporated milk cans (three -rings
with a punch -hole opening), seven sanitary cans with crimped seams that are 4 3/8 inches x
3 3/8 inches (knife opened), one crushed meat tin, two crushed sanitary cans (3 3/4 inches x
2 1/2 inches), three crown -top beer cans (4 1/2 inches x 2 5/8 diameter), one clear glass bottle
without maker's marks, four carbon car battery fragments, one can with crimped seams and pressure
cap lid that is 6 1/4 inches x 5 1/2 inches in diameter, and one crushed can of unknown type.
A review of the MTP and Historical Indices for T4N, R94W, and the BLM patent website indicates
that Gossard Inc. received a Public Sale Patent (PS No. 1162714) for 1,003 acres on August 1, 1956
(BLM n.d.).
NRHP Eligibility Recommendation and Project Effect: Site 5MF6065 is recommended as not
eligible for inclusion on the NRHP under Criteria A or D. The site consists of a ubiquitous site type
common to the region that is not associated with persons or events important in regional or local
history. It is a surface manifestation consisting of a limited density and diversity of artifacts located
on residual sediment with no potential to contain intact significant subsurface cultural deposits.
Recordation has exhausted the research potential of the site.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
