Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 49
Landowner: Private
Site Dimensions: 140 x 84 m
Site Description: Site 5MF6064 is an open camp located on the southern slope of a
northeast/southwest- trending ridgeline at 6,960 ft (2,121 m) (Figure 6.12). The southern boundary
terminates along a south- trending intermittent drainage. A north/south - trending fence and two -track
road are approximately 246 ft (75 m) east of the site. The general area is characterized by broad
northeast/southwest - trending ridges separated by gulches (Figure 6.13). On -site sediment consists
of a shallow discontinuous veneer of aeolian silty sand overlying, and intermixed with, silty clay
with gravel and eroding bedrock detritus. The vegetation community consists of sagebrush,
rabbitbrush, various forbs, and low grasses. The site has been heavily impacted by erosion.
The site consists of a scatter of artifacts eroding down the south face of a ridge to an incised
drainage. The recorded artifacts consist of three bifaces, one flake tool, one core, 40 flakes, and four
groundstone tools. The three bifaces are manufacturing stages, as none exhibit any evidence of
usewear. The final biface fragment is a medial portion that measures 2.1 P x 2.5 x 0.4 cm and is
made of brown opaque chert. The second biface is a complete preblank that measures 4.9 x 3.0 x
1.0 cm and is made of opaque chert. The third biface is a proximal fragment of an indeterminate
biface that measures 13P x 2.9P x 0.5 cm and is made of quartzite. The flake tool is a possible
graver tip that is made of an unspecified material type and measures 2.5P x 13P x 0.7 cm. The core
is multidirectional, measures 5.4P x 4.8 x 2.2 cm, and is made of quartzite.
The debitage assemblage consists of 40 flakes comprised of 26 tertiary flakes, 10 pieces of shatter,
three secondary flakes, and one primary flake. Various opaque cherts are the most common material
type, with 22 flakes (12 tertiary flakes, two secondary flakes, and eight pieces of shatter). There are
seven quartzite flakes (six tertiary and one primary flakes), six semitranslucent chert flakes (three
tertiary and one secondary flakes and two pieces of shatter), three mudstone tertiary flakes, one
nonvolcanic glass tertiary flake, and one quartz tertiary flake.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
