26 Class X Inventory, Colowyo's Collotn Mitie Project
(40 x 40 -m) area or by a single artifact within a depositional area with potential for subsurface
artifacts or features. A single feature without associated artifacts was recorded as a site. Artifacts
that did not meet the site criteria described above were recorded as isolated finds (117s). All lithic
tools encountered during the Class III inventory were sketched and photographed. The material type
of all flaked stone artifacts was recorded relative to a standardized list of raw material types
established by the BLM Little Snake Resource Area.
Upon encountering an archaeological site or IF, a descriptive field form was completed, a sketch map
was drawn, and an overview photograph was taken. A datum consisting of a metal spike with an
attached aluminum tag inscribed with project /site information was placed at each site. For each site
or IF, the appropriate Colorado Cultural Resource Survey Form was completed. No formal test
excavations were completed at any of the cultural resources recorded during the Class III inventory.
Several sites, however, were probed with limited shovel and auger tests to ascertain soil deposition
and the potential for buried cultural material. Prehistoric diagnostic artifacts were collected during
the project.
In accordance with BLM requests, the 51 previously recorded sites located within the project area
were revisited in order to reevaluate each site (personal communication, Hal Keesling, BLM
Archaeologist, August 2005). Each previously recorded site was relocated, and where the current
location did not match the documented location, the data was updated. The current condition of
these sites was assessed and documented. Any major changes, impacts, or new material was
documented. Sites that had changed significantly from their original recording were recorded using
the same methods outlined above for newly recorded sites. A Colorado Cultural Resource Survey
Update Form was completed for each rerecorded site.
5.2 HISTORIC RESEARCH METHODS
James Lowe served as the project historian/ethnohistorian. Archival research was conducted through
the BLM's Colorado State Office in Lakewood to determine how the historic sites discovered or
47599 TRCMariah Associates Inc.
