Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 23
age, and one lithic scatter with an associated rock pile /cairn of unknown age), and 56 isolated
artifacts; this indicates a potential density of one cultural resource for every 101.2 acres. If this site
density is extrapolated for the approximately 9,452 acres that were not previously inventoried for the
current project, 88.3 new cultural resources would be expected to be discovered.
RAW MATERIAL TYPES
The material type of all flaked stone artifacts was recorded relative to a standardized list of raw
material types established by the BLM Little Snake Resource Area (Table 4.1). Every effort was
made in the field to identify these material types when possible. The discussion provided below in
Section 7.0 synthesizes the results of those efforts. Examination of previously recorded site
information was compared with the standardized material types and, where possible, changed
accordingly. Working with the old information produced mixed and uneven results. Much of the
information was too vague for meaningful extrapolation.
Table 4.1 Standardized List of Raw Material Types, BLM Little Snake Resource Area.
Material Type Primary Source Location Description Comments
Bridger Chert
Uinta Quartzite
Morgan/Madison Chert
Black Argillite
Windy Ridge Quartzite
Kremmling Chert
(white chert)
Wamsutter Oolitic Cheri
Obsidian
Southwest Wyoming,
northwest Colorado
Northeast Utah, northwest
Colorado
Northwest Colorado
Upper Yampa River
Rabbit Ears Pass
Vicinity of Kremmling,
Colorado, Middle Park
Red Desert region,
Wyoming
Utah, Wyoming
Gray /black mottled,
banded (tiger) chert
Coarse - grained, purple,
maroon/red, pink
Orange (pumpkin) chert,
dark purple with
sparkling inclusions
Black metamorphic shale
Light gray quartzite
Opaque to
semitranslucent white to
light brown to gray
White, brown chert with
oolitic inclusions
Secondary cobbles may
occur in the project area
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
