Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 15
3.0 EXISTING DATA AND LITERATURE REVIEW
A file search was conducted through the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation
(OAHP) on July 22, 2005. The BLM's Little Snake Field Office in Craig, Colorado, was also
consulted for information regarding previously completed projects, inventoried areas, and recorded
cultural properties on July 25, 2005.
The file search indicates that 36 projects have previously been conducted within the Colowyo mine
permit boundary. They were conducted for a variety of undertakings that included linear, block, and
combination linear/block surveys, and they are summarized in Table 3.1. Approximately
10,838 acres of the current project area have previously been inventoried.
The projects included seismic projects, access road /highway projects, transmission line projects,
railroad grade projects, core drilling projects, and coal mine lease and expansion projects. The most
notable projects involved exploration and expansion of coal mining in the region. These included
the Colowyo Coal Company Danforth Hills 1995 Lease and Exploration Area Drilling Program and
Conveyor System completed by Metcalf Archaeology Consultants (MAC) in 1995; the Colowyo
Mine: Class III Cultural Resource Inventory of a Proposed Drill Hole Exploration Program
completed by MAC in 1995; the Danforth Hills Inventory Project completed by TRC Mariah in
1983; and the Coal Drilling System Danforth Hills completed by Grand River Institute (GRI) in
1981. These large projects, along with numerous smaller projects, effectively inventoried the
southeastern half of the current Colowyo mine permit boundary. The earlier projects inventoried
Sections 6 and 7 of T3N, R93W; Sections 15,16,20-22,28-30, and 31 of T4N, R93W; Sections 1 -3
and 10 -14 of T3N, R94W; and Sections 25 and 34 -36 of T4N, R94W. Portions of Section 7 of T4N,
R93W, Section 4 of T3N, R94W, and Sections 24, 27, 33 of T4N, T94W, also have previously been
surveyed.
The file search indicates that 51 previously recorded sites are located within the project area
(Table 3.2). They consist of 20 prehistoric sites, 24 historic sites, two multicomponent sites, four
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
