8 Class III Inventoiy, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project
portion of Axial Basin that lies within and near the project area consists of Mancos Shale composed
of shale that lies above Frontier sandstone (Tweto 1979).
Surface soils vary across the project area landscape depending on the topographic location. Soils
on the uplands, slopes, benches, and ridges are generally residual and colluvial with areas of regolith,
and they vary from brown sandy, to sandy clay, to clay loam with moderate to profuse sandstone
cobbles and gravels. Scattered sandstone outcrops are prominent along some of the ridges and
benches. Soils on the lower slopes of the gulches and along the stream bottoms are primarily brown
to tan alluvial silts and sandy clay loam deposits with few pebbles and gravels. Some stream bottom
areas have colluvial sandstone cobbles, gravels, and angular rocks, and others have fine - grained
alluvial silts mixed with residual cherts and sandstone cobbles and gravels. Soil depth is generally
shallow on the residual ridge tops and ranges from moderate to deep, especially along the broader
stream bottoms.
The Yampa River is the major drainage in the region, along with major tributaries that include the
Little Snake River and the Elk River. Several minor tributaries originate in the Danforth Hills that
flow northward through the project area and across Axial Basin into the Yampa River. Perennial
tributaries within the project area include Wilson Creek, Collom Creek, and Morgan Creek.
Ephemeral tributaries within the project area include the East and West Fork of Jubb Creek, Little
Collom Gulch, Red Littleton Canyon, Hurst Gulch, and the East Fork of Morgan Gulch. All of these
streams, including the Yampa River, drain into the Colorado River southwest of the project area.
Climatically, the project encompasses mountainous areas with a highland climatic regime, and
lower -lying areas are typified by a continental steppe climate. Annual precipitation generally
exceeds 30 inches (76 cm) in mountainous areas, with lower -lying areas averaging between 20 and
30 inches (50 and 76 cm). The majority of the Colowyo project area is typified as a mountainous
region.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
