Class III Inventory, Colowyo's Collom Mine Project 3
1.2 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Colowyo proposes to excavate a new open pit coal mine and to construct an access road, support
facilities, and related work areas on private, state, and BLM- administered land approximately 20 mi
(32 km) southwest of Craig, Colorado (Figure 1.2). The proposed open pit mine would encompass
approximately 1,800 acres (1,672 acres for the mining operation and 124 acres for the access, for a
total of 1,796 acres), but the proposed project area land lease surrounding the proposed mine is
approximately 20,290 acres. Approximately 10,838 acres of the project area were previously
surveyed, leaving approximately 9,452 acres within the project boundary that required a Class III
cultural resource inventory.
The Colowyo mine permit area includes federal and state leases totaling about 20,290 acres, ofwhich
a total of 10,838 acres has had a Class III inventory. This project included the Class III inventory
of most of the remaining 9,452 acres in the Colowyo mine permit area. A Class III inventory was
conducted in the Colowyo mine permit area, so that the boundary of the Collom lease area could be
drawn to minimize adverse effects to cultural resources. Using the cultural resource information,
the lease area boundary was identified and included 1,796 acres. The Class III inventory was
completed in the entire lease area.
The boundary for the Colowyo mine permit area was expanded after completion of the Class III
inventory, leaving approximately 360 acres unsurveyed. This change did not affect the BLM lease
area and access, which is the federal authorization for this project (see Appendix A). Colowyo
indicates that no disturbance is planned for this area. However, if required, a Class III inventory of
this acreage will be conducted, with an addendum report to follow. The file search conducted for
the current project as initially proposed revealed that there are no previously recorded prehistoric or
historic cultural resources within Sections 6 and 7, T3N, R93W, and Sections 28, 29, and 32, T4N,
R93W. The file search results are presented in Section 3.0.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
