CMC — Henderson Operations
DRMS Annual Water Monitoring Report
May 2013
Executive Summary
This report provides a summary of 2012 water monitoring data collected pursuant to the Climax
Molybdenum Company (CMC) — Henderson Operations (Henderson) Technical Revision 16
(TR -16) to Permit M- 1977 -342 Groundwater Management Plan (GWMP). A summary of
groundwater related activities that occurred at Henderson Mill in 2012 is also provided in this
report. The Henderson GWMP was approved by the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(DRMS) in July 2012 and, as such, this is the first submittal of this report. Data is limited to the
summer and winter monitoring periods. Sampling was conducted at the required locations in
accordance with the GWMP and each sample was analyzed for the required parameters.
Groundwater Studies at the Mill
In addition to the collection of water monitoring data in 2012 in accordance with the GWMP, the
Henderson Mill conducted investigations to evaluate groundwater flow and transport pathways
east of the 1 -Dam and 3 -Dam facilities and evaluated potential POC locations. As a part of these
investigations, Henderson commissioned various internal studies in 2012 including the
following:
• Installation and analysis of nine (9) new monitor wells in the areas east of the 1 -Dam and
3 -Dam.
• Aquifer testing and the estimation of representative hydraulic parameters for the aquifer
system east of 1 -Dam and 3 -Dam.
• Field reconnaissance geologic mapping in the area north and northeast of 1 -Dam.
• Water level and water quality monitoring in new and existing internal wells.
The results of these tasks augmented prior data collection activities and contributed to the
development of an updated site conceptual model and a better understanding of hydrogeologic
conditions at the Site. Additional information is provided in the Groundwater Monitoring Point
of Compliance (POC) Technical Memorandum dated May 2013 and appended to this report as
Appendix A.
Mine Water Monitoring
A deviation from the numeric protection limit (NPL) of 6.5 -8.5 pH was observed at the Mine
point of compliance (POC) well MNGW -1 during the December 2012 monitoring event. The
measured value was 6.4 standard units. The surface water data collected at the Mine during 2012
suggests a slight increase in iron, manganese, sulfate and specific conductance concentrations
during the December 2012 monitoring event. These increases were observed at both upgradient
and downgradient locations relevant to mining operations. Historic data indicates that the low pH
value and relatively higher metals concentrations are likely attributable to normal seasonal
fluctuations /low flow winter conditions and not a cause for concern. Acknowledging the limited
data set, a review of the data and related trend evaluations indicate that Henderson mining
activities are not negatively impacting ground or surface water quality in the vicinity of the
Mine.
Mine data are included in this report and presented both in table and graph format.
1 of 5
