PERMIT #: M- 2012 -008
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: TOD
INSPECTION DATE: May 16, 2013
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection conducted by Tyler O'Donnell of the Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety (Division). Kenny Wagner, the mine operator's representative was present during the inspection.
The City of Las Animas Sand Excavation Area is located approximately 5 miles south of Las Animas, Colorado.
The site is permitted as a sand pit. The approved permit area is 11.47 acres. The approved post- mining land
use is rangeland.
The sky was clear. The ground was dry. No mining equipment was operational or present at the time of the
inspection. The current disturbance appeared to be approximately 1 to 2 acres. The operator started mining
in the southwest corner of the permitted area and plans to expand the mining operation to the northeast.
Backfilling and Grading:
No backfilling and grading has been conducted on the site.
Hydrologic Balance:
The bottom of the pit was dry. There was no evidence of excessive erosion. There appeared to be no
significant impacts to the prevailing hydrologic balance.
Gen. Compliance With Mine Plan:
Mining activity was taking place in the southwest portion of the permit area. The current pit was
approximately 5ft to 10ft deep. The current pit was daylighting to the south. All mining activity appeared to
be within the approved permit boundary.
Roads:
The access road was in good condition.
Recl Plan/ Comp:
No reclamation activity has been conducted, in the permitted area.
Revegetation:
At the time of the Inspection, there were almost no annual weeds observed. There was almost no plant
growth on the topsoil stockpiles and very little vegetation growth elsewhere in the disturbed area. The plant
growth within the disturbed area appeared to be volunteer vegetation.
Erosion /Sedimentation:
There was no evidence of excessive erosion (rills, gullies, or sediment fans).
Signs and Markers:
The mine identification sign was not posted at the entrance of the mine site. This will be cited as a problem in
this inspection report. The permit boundary was clearly marked by T- posts, with the tips painted blue.
Topsoil:
There was an adequate amount of topsoil stockpiled along the southwestern portion of the permit area.
