Hydride method does not have the same matrix interference problem that the PD ICP -MS
method does.
Furthermore, the DMR certification statement says:
"I certify under penalty of law that this document and all attachments were prepared
under my direction or supervision in accordance with a system designed to assure that
qualified personnel property gather and evaluate the information submitted. Based on my
inquiry of the person or persons who manage the system, or those persons directly
responsible for gathering the information, the information submitted is to the best of my
knowledge and belief, true, accurate and complete. I am aware that there are significant
penalties for submitting false information, including the possibility of fine and
imprisonment for knowing violations."
Since PSCM feels that the 20 ug/L Se value is NOT accurate, we feel obligated not to use
that value on the DMR.
The lab reports for this sample are attached to this cover letter. They are (in order), the
report indicating the 20 ug/L Se (PD by ICP -MS) and the 1 ug/L Se (TR by ICP -MS), the
report indicating the 1 ug/L Se (PD by ICP -MS, with additional digestion) and the report
indicating < 1 ug/L Se (by AA- Hydride the `U' qualifier on the lab report indicates that
the value was less than the MDL, 1 ug/L).
Please call me at 970 - 276 -5209, or email me at djones @peabodyenergy.com, if you have
any questions.
Sincerely,
Dennis Jones
Hydrologist I
Peabody Energy
P.O.
