NRCS
United States Department of Agriculture
Natural Resources Conservation Service
Akron, CO Service Center
Seeding Plan:
The following comments are intended to support the attached Grass Seeding Plan. Seeding recommendations
included in this plan are designed to be drilled directly into the approved cover which will be established on the
project site. The seed varieties and seeding rates are also specific to this project site and shall be adhered to
when implementing this seed plan. It is also critical that the specified planting dates in this plan are followed in
order to ensure proper seed germination. In addition to using the recommended seed varieties, it is also
recommended that a purity and germination test be conducted within one year of the planting dates. A grass
drill containing an aggressive auger will be required to ensure that seed does not separate and an even seedling
establishment is obtained. As a reminder, the attached grass seeding mix is only formulated for one -acre and
will need to be adjusted for the total area requiring seeded.
Determination of a successful Seeding:
The level of success for the new seeding should take place between the second and fourth growing seasons. An
inadequate stand shall not be determined prior the fourth season following the seeding. A careful evaluation
must be made before deciding to reapply the practice or destroy a potential grass stand. Keep in mind that the
objective is to achieve densities and cover of perennial vegetation found on that site. Stand counts should apply
to seedlings with 3 or more true leaves and in good overall healthy condition. There should be no evidence of
insect, disease, or physical damage to the plants. Using a transect method to determine the average number of
seedlings per square -foot is recommended. The seeding standards described in the table below have been
accepted by your local USDA -NRCS Field Office.
Stand Rating
Average Seeding per ft
Good / Excellent
> 3
Adequate
2
Questionable
1
Inadequate
<1
Plant Materials Technical Note No. 56, September 6, 1987. Natural reseeding and rhizomaty can play
important roles in the success of your seeding establishment.
Closing Remarks:
In regards to any further questions pertaining to this seeding and restoration plan, please do not hesitate to
contact the Akron NRCS Field Office for assistance at (970) 345 -2364 Extension 3.
Sincerely,
Thomas Nadgwick
NRCS- Rangeland Management Specialist
Cc: Dollie Gonzales- District Conservationist
Page 3 of 3
Helping People Help the Land
M Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer
