Binns, Janet
From: Linda Saunders [saunders615 @1ive.com]
Sent: Wednesday, August 03, 2011 10:29 AM
To: Binns, Janet
Subject: Items to be covered before decision
EF has to meet the 1985 regulations that previous mining companies did not have to meet.
Please ask them to stop saying that the area was disturbed by previous mines. They are responsible for meeting the
reclamation andrevegetaion standards.
REFERENCE AREA CHANGE -How can the Division of Mining change a reference area in Year 8 of a 10 year revegetation
period?
The reference area is the standard of comparision. If you change the reference area, how do you know where you are
and if you have meet the revegation standard. Or do we start over with Year 1.
PORTAL REFERENCE AREA -They need to compare the portal revegetation transects that Kent has collected data on in
2006 and 2010 with the original portal reference areas.
He is grouping all the Vento reveg together and reporting it. His model can pull out the portal transects and he needs to
report them to you against the original reference area before any discussion on changing it occurs.
Why hasn't he done this and why does he say this is an interim report. Will he report it in Year 10 and what happens
then?
GRASSLAND REFERENCE AREA -He needs to report the refuse pile against the grassland reference area. Where is it
located in relationship to the refuse pile?
2010 REVEGETATION REPORT -Also the 2010 report had fewer transects. What is with that?
SOURCE OF TOPSOIL- What was the source of the topsoil used for the portal and pond area?
I know that the barrows area provided the topsoil for the refuse pile. Based on this can it be 4 feet deep?
SIZE OF REFUSE PILE -Also is the barrows area included in the total size of the refuse pile calculation?
2010 REVEGETATION REPORT- Kent's 2010 report states that the total herbaceous production was not achieved on the
Vento Reclamation.
Why not?
How can an increase in rabbitbrush from 26.67% in 2006 to 53.33% in 2010 not be substantial (forget the t score
statistical test)
Also the increase in sagebrush was greater from 2006 to 2010 than rabbitbrush.
The entire west side of the refuse pile is covered with it.
We have one grass species- Western Wheatgrass.
We have one tree species - Juniper
And we have two "noxious" shrub species- sagebrush and rabbit brush.
EROSION CONTROL -The area where the rilling needs to be identified so we can keep track of it better.
George cannot see it.
ROADS -Also when you have to guide people around the refuse pole so they don't get stuck- it is not a 2 track road.
The last one they put in dead ended so you had to backup and couldn't get out.
WATER and WELLS -Is there water in the mine. Please find out and what happens to it.
There is not a 2010 Hydrology Report for well testing on the website.
Linda Saunders
