Response to DRMS Adequacy Review (1) — Cotter JD -9 Mine Reclamation Plan Amendment
S. What mitigation measures will be incorporated if water sampling shows an increase in
contaminants and what trigger point will initiate these measures?
Listed below are the trigger points that Cotter is recommending that will initiate
mitigation measures at the JD-9 mine:
Constituent
Aluminum
Iron
Radium 226 (dissolved)
Uranium
Vanadium
Concentration of Concern
5000 µg/L
5000 pg/L
10 pCi/L
4000 pg/L
100 µg/L
The value of 5000 pg/L for Aluminum is based on the Groundwater Standard
for Agriculture.
The value of 5000 µg/L for Iron is based on the Groundwater Standard for
Agriculture.
The value of 10 pCi/L is based on the daily maximum in Cotter's current
discharge permit with CDPHE for the JD -9 Mine.
The value of 4000 µg/L for Uranium(total) is based on the daily maximum in
Cotter's current discharge permit with CDPHE for the JD -9 Mine.
The value of 100 ug/L for Vanadium is based on the Groundwater Standard for
Agriculture.
These constituents were chosen based on the results of the SPLP testing of the
mine waste rock, and concerns with other constituents associated with sandstone
hosted uranium deposits in this general area.
If any of these constituents is exceeded in the monitor wells located down dip of
the JD -9 mine, and are significantly higher than values for these constituents in
the up-dip monitor well, Cotter would propose increased sampling frequency to
13
