4.5 Lower Cow Camp
Fall 2012 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Box Canyon, Apache Rocks, and South of Divide Mining Areas
With the completion of the June 2012 survey, points 111 -124 and 138 -187 have been monitored
twice following being undermined and showed no significant movement. This completes the
permit commitment for these points and consequently they will be removed from the monitoring
schedule going forward.
In compliance with their permit, MCC has documented in detail the original condition of the
Lower Cow Camp area located on Dry Fork Road prior to subsidence in August 2010, and three
additional times following being undermined (Appendix F). The structures at Lower Cow Camp
were surveyed by Schaaf and Associates (formerly West Elk Land Surveying). Pre- and post -
mining photographs were taken of the inside and outside of the cabin, as well as the ground
around it, to archive the general condition of the various structures and to document any change
after mining occurred under this area. The horse stables appeared to be free of any significant
cracks and major damage in the foundation and structure. Conversely, the cabin had numerous
cracks in the foundation and walls. The cracks in the foundation were several inches long and
extended below ground level.
With the completion of the May 2012 survey, Lower Cow Camp has been monitored quarterly
following being undermined until two consecutive measurements show no significant movement.
This completes the permit commitment and consequently Lower Cow Camp will be removed
from the monitoring schedule.
Z \Project Files \72 -99 \831- 032 \831 -032 794 \Engineering \Fall 2012 \Report\Text\2012 Fall Subsidence Report - Final 042413 doc
831 - 032.794
April 2013
Wright Water Engineers, Inc.
