RESULTS
Sample data from the 2011 BRB -5 revegetation monitoring studies are presented in Tables A -1 through
A -8. Sample data from the 2012 BRB -5 revegetation monitoring studies are presented in Tables B -1
through B -8. Sampling data for 2011 and 2012 are summarized in Appendix C. Data on cover,
production, and woody plant density are in Table C -1. Data on species density by lifeform are tabulated
for sampled areas in Table C -2. Data on relative cover by lifeform are compiled in Table C -3. Statistical
adequacy of sampling is reviewed in Table C -4. The list of plant species observed during 2011 (reclaimed
and reference areas) is included as Table D -1. The list of plant species observed during 2012 (reclaimed
and reference areas) is included as Table D -2. Seed mixes used in the reclamation areas are included for
reference in Appendix E. Photographs of representative locations within the reclaimed areas sampled in
2011 and 2012, as well as photographs of Mountain Brush and Sagebrush Reference areas, are included
in Appendix F. Graphs of vegetation and climate data for 2011 and 2012 are presented in Figures C1
through C11 of this report.
In the cover descriptions below, species listed as "also present" were not "hit" during point- intercept
sampling but were present within one meter of either side of the 50 m sample transect line. Unless
otherwise stated, all cover values are for absolute first -hit data only. Percentages are rounded to facilitate
discussion of the results.
2011 Phase III BRB - 5
(Photographs 1 through 8)
COVER
(Table A -1)
Introduced perennial cool season grasses were the predominant lifeform observed in Area BRB -5,
contributing 22.1 percent total first -hit vegetation cover. Of this, intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum
intermedium) contributed the most with 16.4 percent followed by smooth brome (Bromus inermis) with 2.9
percent first -hit vegetation cover. Introduced perennial forbs were the second most observed lifeform
contributing 17.8 percent total first -hit vegetation cover, composed predominately of alfalfa (Medicago
sativa). Additionally, native perennial cool season grasses contributed 10.0 percent first -hit vegetation
cover, consisting primarily of basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) and western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum
smithii). Among the 97 species of vascular plants encountered in quantitative sampling were the noxious
weeds whitetop (Cardaria draba), hound's tongue (Cynoglosum officinale), scotch thistle (Onopordum
acanthium), Canada thistle (Breea arvensis) and Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica).
Of these only three had measurable cover (hound's tongue, 1.07 percent, Canada thistle, 0.30 percent
and whitetop, 0.03 percent).
12
