In the West Portal area containments 1 and 2 are both reported as dry with excellent vegetative cover,
and plenty of sediment storage capacity.
At the bottom of the RDA, containment 5 (or N), is described as having some erosion forming gullies.
The design storage capacity has been surpassed. The containment is reported as dry, and sediment
removal was scheduled for 4/8/2013. The gullies should be monitored and repaired if necessary,
and the sediment should be cleaned out.
Two report sheets have been submitted for containment 3 (or SE), but none for containment 4 (or SW).
No problems are noted, and the report states that the containment was cleared of sediment and restored
to design capacity in March, 2013.
Finally, rule 4.05.9(17) requires that copies of impoundment inspection reports are retained at the mine
site, and that they are submitted to the Division on a quarterly. We received copies of reports from
Q1, 2013 the day after we received those from Q4, 2012, which negates the value of the quarterly
reporting somewhat.
Sincerely,
Y
Leigh Simmons.
Environmental Protection Specialist
