(BME), has submitted to he Division of
Reclamation Mining and Safety (DRMS) a permit revision to increase Deserado Mine's permit boundary by an
additional 1656.3 acres. Deserado Mine is located in the Rio Blanco County just north of Rangely, CO and is a
longwall underground coal mining operation.
In conjunction with the permit revision, BME is currently in the process of applying for a coal lease, COC- 74813,
from the Bureau of Land Management. As part of the lease application process, BLM has conducted and
Environmental Assessment (EA) to address all potential impacts to the proposed lease and revision area,
including cultural resources.
DRMS would like to inform you that BLM documented thirteen sites as potentially eligible for the National
Register of Historic Places within the area of the proposed lease. Currently, DRMS is planning to have BME
address these sites and update their mining permit and related maps to include them. DRMS feels that a future
meeting with the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation would be beneficial to ensure all issues
regarding cultural resources are addressed.
Attached is BLM's most recent version of their EA in regards to BME's coal lease application.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time.
Sincerely,
https: / /mai l.g oog le.conVmai 1 /u /0 / ?ui =2 &i Ire29129fcb5 &view pt &search =i nboy&th= 13dfaOf5a5afeeb3 1/2
