Borch Environmental Pollution Consulting, LLC October 2, 2012
2) Based on conversations with the Morgan family, it is clearer to me that the post mining
topography will negatively impact their farming practices. The pipe and furrow irrigation
previously used will likely be impossible for parts of the property previously irrigated in that
fashion. The use of side -roll sprinklers will not be compatible with row crop production. It is
also well known that sloping soils tempt to accumulate clay at the bottom and sand at the top
which can influence crop yields.
10.0 Opinions
Based upon my review of the data and the scientific literature, I have significant concerns about
the prospects for reclamation success on the Morgan property.
Yours Sincerely,
Thomas Borch, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Environmental Soil Chemistry & Biogeochemistry
Department of Soil and Crop Sciences
Department of Chemistry (joint position)
Faculty Member of The Graduate Degree Program in Ecology (GDPE)
Faculty Member of The School of Global Environmental Sustainability
Faculty Member of Center for Environmental Medicine
Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523-1170
Phone: 970 -491 -6235; Mobile: 970 - 689 -0918
Email: borch @colostate.edu
Borch Environmental Pollution Consulting, LLC
201 Page
PLTF 002494
