Wise Hill Mine Fire Drilling Project
PROJECT WORK DESCRIPTION
Background Information
The Wise Hill Coal Mine Fire, also known as the Hart Mine Fire, has had several mine
fire abatement projects completed over the past fifteen years. The coal fire abatement
efforts have been ineffective in reducing the extent of the underground coal mine fire.
Recent site visits have indicated very dynamic fire conditions, with subsidence, venting,
and surface fracturing increasing in frequency and extent. DRMS is in the planning
phase of a mine fire abatement project, which will include a drilling program, and.
possible dig and quench or cut -off trench development.
Project Objectives
The objectives of this Task Order are to provide subsurface geologic descriptions which
will include the number and depths of coal seams in the study area, delineate the total
extent of the burning seams, and determine the seam(s) of coal that are currently burning.
Subsurface stratigraph_y and extent of the burning area, based on the results of the drilling
program, will be used to determine excavation volumes necessary for reclamation
activities at the site. Drill holes will be advanced using Down the Hole Hammer
(DTHH).
Site Conditions
The project area is located immediately east of Highway 13 approximately four miles
south of the town of Craig, in Moffat County, at 400 25' 41.73 "; 107° 38' 44.39 ", with an
elevation of 6,330 feet. The site is accessed. from Highway 13, via the Double Eagle
Mine entrance gate (see attached location map). The gate must remain locked at all
times. DRMS will provide Shannon & Wilson a key to the gate during the pre - drilling
site walkthrough. DRMS will work with the driller to establish logical locations for drill
hole placement in the field. Drillers will provide their own safety equipment, including a
gas meter capable of monitoring oxygen (O,) and carbon monoxide (CO) levels. Caution
should be exercised by drilling crews to ensure that the ground surface is stable. Use of a
heavy bar to check for ground stability in venting areas is recommended. High tension
power lines are located directly above the site, with two sets of power poles located
within the project area. Caution must be taken when maneuvering the drill rig in the
vicinity of the power lines and power poles.
TASKS
Task 1- Investa2atory Drilling
1.1 Drilling Equipment
Drilling subcontractor will provide an all terrain drill rig with winch if necessary
capable of accessing drill locations over steep and rocky terrain. The contractor
currently plans to use a CME 55 -300 track- carrier - mounted drilling rig (total
