Ash Disposal
DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES
For the calendar year 2012, a total of 35,029 tons (1,523 truckloads) of
mixed fly and bottom ash were transported to, and disposed of at the Coors
Energy Company, Keenesburg Mine site. Because A -Pit reclamation is
complete, and that pit has been closed, the entire quantity of ash delivered in
2012 was placed in South B -Pit. Thus, the 2012 ash disposal activity brings
the total B -Pit ash volume to 752,231 tons (5,667 tons in North B -Pit, and
746,564 tons in South B -Pit). The total amount of ash disposed of at the
Keenesburg Mine between 1987 and the end of 2012 was 996,584 tons.
In accordance with the conditions of the Permit, the Keenesburg site
continues to accept only ash that is the by- product of the coal combustion
process, and which is generated at the power plant located in Golden,
Colorado, the MillerCoors, LLC (formerly Coors Brewing Company) plant
location. Since September, 1995 this power plant has been owned and
operated by Colorado - Golden Energy Corporation (CGEC). (formerly
Trigen - Colorado Energy Corporation). According to the agreements
between CGEC and CEC, ash from this power plant will continue to be
transported to, and used for reclamation at the Keenesburg site until the
reclamation requirement has been satisfied.
During 2012 the steam coal used to fuel the CGEC power plant was
supplied by Twenty Mile Coal Company (a Peabody Coal Company
subsidiary) from its mine located at Energy, Colorado (southwest of
Steamboat Springs). This coal has been previously tested and approved in
accordance with the requirements of the Permit, and has been supplied to
and used at the power plant for multiple years. As of the beginning of the
year (2012) the decision was made to cease the use of stoker coal at the
power plant. The stoker boiler has been "mothballed" and is not expected to
resume operation. Thus, unlike previous years, no stoker coal was
consumed during 2012.
Samples of the ash produced by the burning of coal at the CGEC power
plant are collected annually as part of the ongoing qualification process of
the ash for disposal at the Keenesburg Mine site.
