The City of Florence water rights will not be effected by Southfield's
mining operations since the Newlin Creek diversion upstream of the mine
area diverts all flow from Newlin Creek.
The Thompson Ranch Well, which is completed in the Rex Carbon Seam is no
longer functional and has not been used for a number of years. The well
is connected to a waterline extending from the portals of the abandoned
Rex Carbon Mine. Originally, the well provided water to the Thompson
Ranch, however the waterline was broken by blasting activities at a nearby
surface mining operation. At the time of the initial break, the Rex
Carbon Mine had apparently not been abandoned, access to the underground
line was still possible, and the line was repaired. However, after
closure of the Rex Carbon Mine, the underground line was again broken by
either surface blasting activities or caving in the underground workings
and could not be accessed for repair. While a water right for ten (10)
gallons per minute still exists for the Thompson Well, the well is non-
• functional, has not been used for a number of years, and would probably
not be affected by Southfield's mining operation, since the Rex Carbon
Seam is separated from the interval affected by mining by approximately
400 feet of relatively low permeability siltstones and shales.
The Corley Mine Well which was completed in the abandoned Corley mine
workings in the Rex Carbon Coal Seam is an active well which is utilized
as the primary water supply for mining operations. Because of this mine
use, EFCI maintains documentation on discharge from the well. This
documentation indicates no mining related impacts on flows from the well
consistent with the assumption that vertical separation and low
permeability of the intervening strata provide effective hydrologic
separation and preclude potential mining related impacts.
The Corley Company Well, completed in the Raton formation is a marginal
well producing only one (1) gallon per minute. The well apparently
intercepts a perched groundwater aquifer which should not be effected by
. mining due to well location and significant vertical separation.
2.05.6-14
