The granitic and biotitic gneiss observed in the highwalls is typically slightly to moderately
weathered and locally fresh. The rock generally displays two prominent joint sets and a foliation
surface. Joint spacing ranges from approximately 2 inches up to 7 feet. Joint surfaces generally
are slightly rough to rough and are usually very tight to moderately open. When joint surfaces
are open or exposed, the joint faces are typically slightly to moderately weathered with iron
staining. With the exception of localized areas, the joints generally do not contain infill material.
Foliation plane spacing ranges from less than one inch up to 6 feet. Foliation surfaces generally
are slightly rough to rough and are usually very tight to moderately open. When foliation
surfaces are open or exposed, the aperture is up to one tenth of an inch and the foliation faces are
typically slightly weathered with iron staining. The foliation generally does not contain infill
material. The highwalls observed were dry and seepage through the rock at the upper elevations
is not anticipated.
With the exception of the shear zone, average RMR values calculated for the rock exposed in the
highwalls of the South Quarry range from 20 to 69 indicating poor to good rock.
The sillimanitic gneiss observed in the fault zone is typically moderately to highly weathered and
altered. A band of weak rock parallels the fault zone. Few prominent joint sets are observable
and the foliation varies greatly.
Average RMR values calculated for rock within the weak rock associated with the fault zone
range from 10 to 28 indicating very poor to poor rock. Joint orientation field data and RMR
spreadsheets for the highwalls are included in Appendix A. Scanline descriptions are included
below.
Bench 7450
Bench 7450 was unmappable due to access and safety concerns. Visual observation from a
significant distance indicated that the highwall appeared stable with minor raveling having
occurred. A more thorough investigation of the bench and high wall is recommended when
bench access and safety are improved.
7375 — 7270 Haul road Highwall
The 7375 to 7270 haul road scanline is approximately 475 feet long and was separated into 5
discrete sections. The approximate orientation of the highwall varies between 40 degrees (north
40 degrees east) and 340 degrees (north 20 degrees west). The scanline focused on the lower 10
— 30 feet of the highwall, as this is the area where haul road construction had occurred in 2012.
The remaining portions of the high wall (up to 100 feet) had previously been mapped for the
2011 Geotechnical Addendum.
• Stations 0 +00 through 0 +70 consisted of moderately to highly fractured biotitic
gneiss. The foliation strike varies in this area due to minor folding and ranges from
60 to 90 degrees. Foliation dips averaged 21 degrees to the northwest. Foliation
spacing ranges from approximately 4 inches to more than 2 feet, and foliation
4
Morrison Quarry Annual Report 2012
P \23514 \133- 23514- 13002\Deliverables\Deliv -Ol -2012 Annual Report \Annual_Report_20I2_Geotech doc
January 2013
