The investigation involved 9 nitrogen treatments with <br /> three replications at each of two sites. The nitrogen was hand <br /> broadcast on September 3 , 1976 at the rate of 70 lbs. N/A. <br /> The nitrogen treatments were : <br /> 1 . Ammonium nitrate ( 33-0-0 ) <br /> 2. Ammonium nitrate (33-0-0 ) + N-serve <br /> 3 . Ammonium sulfate ( 21-0-0 ) <br /> 4 . Ammonium sulfate ( 21-0-0 ) + N-serve <br /> 5. Urea (46-0-0 ) <br /> 6. Urea ( 46-0-0 ) + N-serve <br /> 7 . Sulfur-coated urea ( 42-0-0 ) <br /> 8. Sulfur-coated urea (42-0-0 ) + N-serve <br /> 9 . Control (no nitrogen) <br /> The two sites chosen for plots were : 1 ) a disturbed <br /> soil area where plants were showing N deficiency, and 2 ) a <br /> natural meadow with a good vegetation cover where an N response <br /> is expected. Observations on August 25, 1977 revealed an excel- <br /> lent growth response to added N on the disturbed soil , however , <br /> there were no obvious differences due to the various nitrogen <br /> sources. On the natural meadow there was only a slight growth <br /> response to the N fertilization. <br /> 9 . 8 LIME RATE STUDY ON TAILING, 1976 <br /> Oxidation of pyrites makes it very difficult to pre- <br /> dict the amount of lime needed for long-term neutralization of <br /> acid tailing in the field. Objectives of this study were to 1 ) <br /> determine the optimum lime rate to apply to coarse-textured <br /> Climax tailing under field conditions; 2 ) monitor the acidity <br /> levels of the tailing treatments over a long term; and 3 ) <br /> monitor lime movement in the tailing profile as affected by <br /> natural precipitation over time . <br /> The study consisted of four lime rates and three <br /> replications . The lime rates were : <br /> 1 . 2 T/A CaCo3 <br /> 2. 4 T/A CaCO3 <br /> 3 . 6 T/A CaCO3 <br /> 4 . 8 T/A CaCO3 <br /> 9-15 <br />
