The plots were located in subsoil (glacial till ) on a
5 to 1 west-facing slope. The plot area was 180 ' long by 30 '
wide and each individual plot is 10 ' X 301 . The plot area was
fertilized with phosphate at the rate of 150 lbs. P2O5/A as
0-46-0 prior to seeding . The plots were seeded at the rate of
30 lbs./A with the Climax seed mixture .
Procedure
The phosphate fertilizer was hand broadcast on the
plot area, half of it was spread before furrowing , then the
other half was applied after furrowing . After all the P was
applied, the area was furrowed again at a right angle to the
first operation. The furrowing was done by dragging the teeth
of the bucket of a large front-end loader. The plots were then
seeded and raked lightly. After the seeds were covered, the
nitrogen fertilizer was hand broadcast on all the plots except
the controls. The seeding and initial fertilization was
completed by June 14, 1974 . The nitrogen fertility treatments
will be applied in June of every year for a period of five
years.
Results
Evaluation of the plots after three growing seasons on
August 20, 1976 revealed:
Control
extremely nitrogen deficient plants
- grass stand thinner than plots receiving nitrogen
average plant height 2-3"
One year N application; 1974 for a total of 60 lbs.
