The following are comments resultant of our review and interpretation of <br /> the Division requests. I have developed my responses to coincide with the order in which they <br /> are brought forth in your letter. <br /> Site Hydrogeology <br /> The Division expressed an interest in the rationale behind Climax Molybdenum Company's <br /> (CMC's) assertion that the bulk permeability of rock in the underground is not capable of <br /> transporting significant quantities of water. While site specific information from the Climax <br /> underground workings is limited, there is a strong argument available given known <br /> characteristics of the Idaho Springs Formation and Silver Plume Granite in which the Climax <br /> Ore Body resides. <br /> Information from packer tests taken in the Idaho Springs Formation at the Henderson Mill <br /> indicates that the formation is extremely tight with hydraulic conductivities that approach 0.0 <br /> ft/yr within 80 feet of surface. These results are presented in Technical Exhibit No. 1. <br /> Underground workings at Climax are situated deep within Bartlett Mountain and represent what <br /> are easily defined as open channels with infinite hydraulic conductivity. The low to very-low <br /> permeability of the bulk Precambrian bedrock is not capable of transmitting a significant <br /> quantity of water and the primary pathway for water flow is within the underground workings. <br /> Please find the Climax Storm Water Management Plan enclosed with this submittal. This copy <br /> will also serve as an addendum to the August 11, 1995, submittal of the Climax Mine <br /> Environmental Protection Plan pursuant to Rule 6.4.19 (10) (b). <br />
