Memo to File M-77-493 2 April 10, 2001
Task: Haul water pool fill from edge of pond; dump and spread in Mayflower water pool
Volume: 714,525 cubic yards
Task: Haul and spread topsoil in Mayflower Pond
Volume: 129,066 cubic yards
Task: Install geogrid in Mayflower water pool prior to backfillling
Quantity: 774,400 square yards
The September 1998 DMG cost estimate lists the following earthwork calculation information for
Mayflower tailing area:
Task 65 -Haul water pool fill to edge of Mayflower Pond and dump in temporary stockpile
Volume: 714,525 cubic yards
Task 66 -Haul water pool fill from edge of pond; dump and spread in Mayflower water pool
Volume: 714,525 cubic yards
Task 66a-Haul and spread topsoil in Mayflower Pond
Volume: 129,066 cubic yards
Task 108a-Install geogrid in Mayflower water pool prior to backfillling
Quantity: 774,400 square yards
The foregoing comparison demonstrates that DMG and Climax used identical volumes and areas for
estimating Mayflower tailing reclamation costs. The source of the volume and area quantities is the 4-
1-94 report complied by Stoller Mining Services Division for the Climax Mine. Section VII.d. of the
Stoller report states that 1,071,788 tons of material are required to complete backfilling in the
Mayflower water pool. Assuming a unit weight of 1.5 tons/cubic yard for the backfill material, the
volume of 714,525 cubic yards used in both the DMG and Climax cost estimates was derived. This
volume of backfilling material is designated for use in the Mayflower water pool. No volumes for
Mayflower beach capping material or Mayflower dam face capping material were provided in the
Stoller report, which states on page 20 that the "Mayflower tailing impoundment was capped during
1991. This project is complete." Based on this and other statements in the report, and on observations
of the Mayflower capping project that was completed in 1991, DMG did not include line items for
capping of Mayflower beach and dam face in the 1998 cost estimate. Fred R. Banta Inc. and Golder
Associates did not include line items for capping of Mayflower beach and dam face in the 1999 cost
estimate. Hence there is no money in the current bond that can be released based on the elimination of
reclamation liability for Mayflower beach capping as approved with SR-03.
cAwindows\personahchmax mayflower beach capping cost.doc
