2011 Annual Status Report
Aggregate Industries: Greeley F Street Site January 17, 2012
• A broad bench of potential wetlands adjacent to, and south of, Area A was inundated by
the flood. As the water receded, the bench appears to provide a perfect substrate for
willow and cottonwood germination and establishment. A wetland fringe is developing
along the new shoreline and large, dense stands of reed canarygrass continue to
expand in this area.
• The existing herbaceous wetland in the northwest corner of Area B has continued to
develop and expand in 2011. This trend is expected to continue as the area appears to
have connection with a subsurface water source, as well as connection to the north
shoreline of the West Side Pond.
• Large areas of wetlands are establishing along the south shoreline of the West Side
Pond. Some of these areas are apparently supported by subsurface water and so are
hydrologically independent from pond water levels. Other areas do appear to be
associated with pond shore capillary fringe. It is expected these areas will stabilize with
pond water levels.
• The F Street site provides substantial habitat diversity; open water, shrub slopes,
shoreline, and adjacent wetland areas. A large number of waterfowl, shorebirds, and
raptors use the site, as well as toads and fish, coyotes, raccoons, and deer.
Literature Cited
Colorado Department of Agriculture. 2010.
