This same relatively small standard deviation of the soil ECe data can be seen in both the surface
of the stockpiles (Table 2) and within each five foot sampling increment (Table 2). In the top
five-feetof the soil stockpile the standard deviation within the Lift A, Lift B, and Mixed Topsoil
stockpiles is 1.0, 0.4 and 0.9 dS/m, respectively (N = 10). These standard deviations are less
than or approximately equal to the standard deviation of the entire stockpile.
Review of the soil ECe data in five foot increment lifts (Table 3) indicates similar variability as
the previous two examples. This again indicates that the soil within the soil stockpiles is very
homogenous both throughout the profileand within individual lifts.
Table 1. In this context, laboratory error is acceptable
distance that the laboratory measured value can be away from the actual value and still be
considered the same value. The acceptable laboratory errorforECe of the saturated paste extract
is typically +/-20% on the laboratory control sample. A 20% laboratory error on the Lift Bsoil
samples would equate to +/-0.74 dS/m. Therefore in soil science testing and analysis it is fair to
say that the variability in soil EC in the soil stockpile is less than the detection limit of the lab.
8
{00136879.1 }
