Clarence E. Henke
P.O. Box 1061
Morrison, Colorado 80465
RE: Hidee Tourist Mine Inspection on January 10, 2013
Dear Mr. Henke:
On January 10, 2013, The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted two inspections of
the surface and underground areas of the Hidee Tourist Mine in Gilpin County, Colorado. This
inspection was conducted in response to your written complaint received by DRMS on January 2,
2013 which indicated possible mining activity and unsafe conditions at the Hidee Mine. The Hidee
mine has operated under the definition of a tourist mine for over 50 years under a lease with the
landowners of record. As defined in the Regulations of the Mine Safety & Training Program for
Tourist Mines, 2 C.C.R. 407 -6, the definition of a tourist mine is "any mine whose primary purpose is
for tours open to the public rather than development of minerals, which the owner /operator does
not have the intent to produce or sell a product that significantly affects commerce."
On the day of the inspection, representatives of the Hidee Gold Mining Company and the Broken
Handle Mining Company were present and accompanied our inspectors. There was no evidence of
either surface or underground mining or loading and transport activities occurring on the site. The
entire operation was found to be orderly, neat and safe even though the mine is closed to public
tours until the spring. Clearly, the Hidee mine continues to meet the definition of a tourist mine
and the operator expressed their intent to continue to operate as a tourist mine only.
Please find enclosed a copy of the Division inspection reports. I would suggest you work closely
with the operator and other owners so that you can learn more about the important role that these
tourist mines play in educating the public about mining in Colorado.
Sincerely,
0 , (
C
Loretta E.
