O'Conner, Chairman
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board
423 Centennial Building
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: 1985 Annual Report - Climax Mine; Permit No. 77-493
Dear Mr. O'Connor:
The year 1985 was extremely depressed for the mining and
minerals industry generally and particularly for molybdenum
mining . During the first six months of 1985, the Climax
Mine produced an average of 32, 700 tons per day with a work
force of approximately 800 people. This rate of production
is about 68% of the mine capacity. The workforce was
further reduced in July and August to approximately 520,
where it remained at the end of the year. From September
through the end of the year the production rate was reduced
to 45% of capacity.
AFFECTED LANDS
Affected lands did not increase significantly except for
the areas related to tailing deposition and the McNulty
Dump (Area 6 ) . The Mayflower tailing pond crest line was
raised approximately 17-1/2 ' , increasing the areal extent
of the pond from 335 acres in 1982 to 361 acres at years
end. Tailing deposition occurred in the Mayflower pond
until mid-October at which time deposition was diverted to
the Tenmile pond while Mayflower was utilized as a
demonstration water treatment system. Deposition in the
Tenmile pond did not increase the area of disturbance in
1985.
Open pit waste continued to be deposited on the McNulty
Dump during 1985. Approximately eight million tons were
added, bringing the total to over 38 million tons.
Other disturbances around the mine site totaled
approximately seven acres and included haul road widening
and maintenance, collector line and associated access road
extension, domestic water line construction, construction
of tailing line cutouts, and expansion of lateral drain
systems.
A corporate staff department of AMAX Inc.
