The
latter two species are extensive colonizers on su_aTpine is ur antes.
Introduced species were inadvertently seeded over these plots when a hydroseeder
was used to water the plots in the summer of 1979. The mine rock waste is about
60 cm thick over acid tailing.
These plots were evaluated by Guillaume in 1980. Only 1985 data is
included in this writeup. In 1985 some of the steep slope plots had the
appearances of being affected by acidification of the rock waste (red iron
staining) and supported little or no vegetation. No attempt was made to
evaluate vegetation on the affected plots.
The data allows no good statistical comparisons but the favorable effect of
the sewage sludge treatments is obvious (Table 1). As expected, the steep slope
is a more difficult site on which to establish and maintain vegetation cover
(Table 1). In general , the upper 1/3 of the steep slope had much less
vegetation than the lower portion of the slope.
The forbs, Achillea lanulosa and Linaria vulgaris, had a high frequency on
the plots treate wF---sewage sludge or opsoi a es 2 and 3).
Table 1.
