Climax Mine Permit No. 77-493
1982 Annual Report
Page Three
Trifolium sp. , Deschampsia caespitosa, and Carex spp. The
most successful species on the sloped waste rock plots were
Linearia sp. , Deschampsia caespitosa, Daucus carota, and
Rumex sp.
The Company committed to reevaluating the reclamation
costs for surety determination every two years in conjunction
with the submittal of the annual report. We have reevaluated
the costs and found that we overestimated the acreages of
various disturbances projected to this date, and therefore
overbonded in 1981 for the period 1981-1982. Comparison of
Table 6. 1 (Timetable of Disturbances ) with Table 11. 1
(Reclamation Costs ) indicates that many of the 36 specific
areas were bonded for total disturbance through the life of
the mine. As indicated in the timetable, Area 1 (the Open
Pit, Haul Road, Stockpiles and Subsidence) presently occupies
about 1154 acres but surety was provided to cover the maximum
estimated disturbance of 1265 acres. Area 5 (the Climax
Complex and Storke Level ) presently occupies less than 400
acres and is not expected to expand beyond 400 acres in the
next 2 years. Site preparation (timbering ) of 368 acres for
Area 6 (McNulty Dump and Haul Road ) is adequate to
accommodate anticipated expansion for at least 2 more years
and was bonded for the full 368 acres. Area 15 (No. 2 Dam)
is slowly shrinking as Tenmile Tailing Pond encroaches on it.
Area 22 (Tenmile Tailing Pond) presently occupies about 504
acres, but was bonded for a life of the mine total of 524
acres. Area 31 (Mayflower Tailing Pond) presently covers 302
acres, is anticipated to cover 318 acres by the end of 1984 ,
and is bonded for 388 acres. Area 32 (Mayflower Dam) is
bonded for 18 acres, presently occupies about 22 acres, and
is expected to increase by only 3 acres by the end of 1984.
None of Area 34 (Spill Prevention Dam) has been disturbed and
little if any construction is anticipated before the end of
1984.
Aggregating the past, present and future conditions
discussed above for the major affected areas leads us to the
conclusion that our present bond of $22 million is adequate
to cover all reclamation costs of anticipated disturbances at
the Climax Mine through the ensuing two years.
