The irrigated fields have been used to grow alfalfa and corn for over 100 years, since the
irrigation system in Grand Junction is one of the oldest in the State. Along the perimeter of the
fields are some minor patches of knapweed which require spraying. United will undertake this
spraying in the spring of 2013.
There are some minor cottonwood trees along a north -south row in the south central part of the
permit area and another north -south row along the western edge of the residential property
purchased by United in the northeast corner of the permit. Both of these areas will be removed
by the mining operation. As described in the reclamation plan, the cottonwood trees will be
replaced by saplings along the lake edges.
The site is bordered by the following uses, which are shown on Map C -1:
To the west: 32 1 /2 Road, owned by Mesa County
To the north: D 1/2 Road owned by Mesa County and the Mabel Mcintosh residence.
To the east: a number of residences and outbuildings purchased and owned by Oldcastle SW
Group dba United Companies and land owned by the Clifton Sanitation District.
To the south: The 33 Road Drain, owned by the Grand Valley Drainage District and a large
overhead powerline right of way owned by Xcel Energy.
