The lakes created from the mining operations are not in any danger of being captured by the
River during a flood for two main reasons:
1) There is approximately 1200 feet from the closest edge of the Colorado River to the pit.
2) This section of River is not eroding the north bank and has been stable for many years.
Portable sanitation facilities will be provided to all workers at the mine site. These facilities will
be located outside the floodplain near the scale house. The waste will be taken off site for
treatment in an approved facility by an approved and licensed contractor. There will be no leach
fields or other means of sewage disposal.
2. Hvdrologv and Sediment Control for Mining
No major streams or intermittent streams intersect the disturbed areas. Sediment control for the
permit area is provided by the following items:
1) Prior to any topsoil stripping, a sediment pond of approximately 0.7 acres in size will be
installed at the southeast edge of the permit area to temporarily detain the water from the pit
pumping prior to discharge. Initially, this pond will be excavated from the topsoil and
overburden and will be totally incised. There will be no dam. A collection ditch of 1.5 feet depth
and 2H:1 V sideslopes will be installed on the south edge of Pit 1 which will drain east to the
sediment pond and a similar ditch will be installed on the eastern edge of Pit 1, which will drain
directly south to the sediment pond. Any water entering the sediment pond will be pumped out to
the 8" plastic pipe which will deliver the water to the 33 Road Drain, as shown on Map C -2. As
the gravel mining progresses, trenches will be dug around the perimeter of the pit which will be
graded to the sediment pond. There will be no trench along the west edge of the pit, since no
inflow should come from this direction. The pump which will be installed in the sediment pond
will always be lower than the working area, thus draining the groundwater from the gravel and
keeping it clean. Also, the pond will have a gravel filter berm around the inlet to the pump. This
water will be pumped and will be discharged to the 33 Road Drain through the same 8" pipe.
