INTRODUCTION
The Otter Creek Pit, is a new planned sand and gravel operation located approximately 2.0 miles
east of Grand Junction in Clifton, Colorado in Mesa County. The permit area is located on the
property immediately east of 32 1 /2 Road and immediately south of D 1/2 Road. All of the permit
area is on land owned by the permittee: OldCastle SW Group, Inc. dba United Companies of
Mesa County. The current land use is irrigated pasture on the majority of the permit area, while
a portion in the southern part is not used and has been previously disturbed.
A portion of land in the permit area (southern portion) lies within the 100 -yr floodplain of the
Colorado River, which is located to the south of the property. The sand and gravel resources in
the pit range from 21 feet to 26 feet in thickness overlain by topsoil and overburden of 4 ft to 15
ft total thickness. A large portion of the gravel is below the water table, therefore, pumping will
be used to dewater the pit prior to mining. Excess overburden and topsoil will be used to create 2
lakes with wetland fringes upon reclamation. It is currently planned that areas of land around the
lakes would be used for wildlife habitat and possible recreation use, which has been approved by
Mesa County.
A Special Use Application has been presented to Mesa County for this pit, which has been
approved.
The permittee for this site is OldCastle SW Group, Inc. dba United Companies of Mesa County.
The name has been shortened throughout this application to United Companies.
Otter Creek Pit December 12 i -1
