6
On the average, 63 percent of an annual precipitation of 17 inches
occurs during the five months of April through August. The hottest
month is July, with a mean average temperature of 66°F. January, with
a mean average temperature of 29°F. is the coldest. During the 20
years of record, snow has fallen in all months except July, August
and September. An average total snowfall of 13 inches occurs during
each month of February, March and April . Average total snow for the
winter is 66 inches.
These climatological data for the Allen and Maxwell Mine areas
indicate an environment of relatively low stress for wildlife. On
rare occasions a depth of 18 inches or more of snow may be reached,
usually for a brief period. While this, and cold weather, represents
increased stress for such game populations as elk (Cervus eZaphus),
mule deer (OdocoiZeus hemionus) and wild turkey (MeZeagris gaZZopavo),
occasions of high hazards are rare. The Purgatoire River and associated
small ponds will generally be frozen and unavailable for waterfowl from
about November 15 to the end of March.
Watershed Characteristics
The North Fork of the Purgatoire originates above timberline at an
elevation of more than 12,000 feet on the east flank of Trinchera Peak.
The many creeks that feed the South Fork head along the Sangre de Cristos
from Purgatoire Peak north to Culebra Peak.
