The native vegetation is mainly pinyon, juniper,
and grass. Elevation is 6, 500 to 7, 800 feet. The average annual precipi-
tation is about 14 to 18 inches, the average annual air temperature is 47
to 52 degrees F. , and the average frost-free season is 115 to 135 days.
']'his unit is 40 percent Louviers very channery clay loam, 20 percent
Rombo stony clay loam, and 15 percent Travessilla channery loam. Louviers
and Rombo soils are on very steep side slopes. Rombo soils are limited
t.o north-facing slopes. ;' Travessilla soils are on ridges.
Included in this un;iL are 1.0 percent Prieta loam and 10 percent Rock
j
outcrop. Prieta soils o:cclir on broad ridge tops and have a developed
l subsoil . Rock outcrop occurs as bands of sandstone near the crest of side
l slopes. Also Included are small areas of Fort Collins loam at the base
of the• side slops . The Fort Collin:; soils are deep to bedrock.
t.ou1.':eLs soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum
,ad colluvi um derived dolinantly from shale. Typically the surface layer
is very channery clay loam 4 inches thick. The upper 9 inches is shaly
C10Y GVer interbedded shale and Si1LSLone at a depth of
16 inches . The
toil is neutral throughout. Shale fragments range from 10 to 50 percent
D._pch to shale budroc k t0 rangy -s from 10 2- 0 1:1chCS .
Permeability of the Louviers soil is moderately slow. Available
. nLer capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches .
Runoff is very rapid and the hazard of water erosion is very high.
