Revised 11/15/81
The habitat associated with the Purgatoire River and its surrounding
areas will be protected by CF&I Steel Corporation by the current plan
which will not disturb the surface of this area and the subsidence
control plan which will support the surface and not cause subsidence
during the life of the mine or thereafter.
Protection of Hydrological Balance
A surface water control plan has been prepared and is shown on the Mine
Hydrology Map (Map 9) and the Sediment and Surface Water Control Plan
Map (Map 13). This plan has been developed and is currently in use to
direct all surface waters from within the disturbed area through
sediment control structures where the water quality can be monitored and
controlled prior to discharge. CF&I Steel Corporation currently
monitors and plans to continue to monitor the water quality as covered
under the NPDES Permits during the life of the operation. Detailed
studies of the water quality associated with the surface disturbances
are reviewed in Exhibit 6, Hydrology and Geology Information. Water,
Waste, and Land Limited has prepared this report and has continued
detailed studies of the impacts and control of surface waters and their
relationship to the underground hydrologic system at the Maxwell Mine.
The Regional Hydrology Map (Map 8) and the Mine Hydrology Map (Map 9)
show the extensive monitoring program which CF&I Steel Corporation has
installed to ensure protection of the hydrologic balance at the Maxwell
Mine.
A spill prevention control plan has been prepared by the CF&I Steel
Corporation and is on file at the Maxwell Mine. Generally this plan
calls for containing any potential oil spills and preventing the
material from reaching or coming in contact with existing surface water.
A system of retaining dikes and absorbent material is planned for use if
a spill occurs.
The rights of present users to surface and groundwater which is
currently present in the area of the Maxwell Mine is reviewed in Exhibit
8, Water Well Information. CF&I Steel Corporation has completed a study
2.05-43
