Revised 11/15/81
Mulching techniques which CF&I Steel Corporation plans to utilize during
the reclamation effort will be based on the recommendations made by the
Department of Range Science, Colorado State University, Fort Collins,
Colorado and shown in Exhibit 18 of this application. Generally, mulch
will be placed by utilization of a mulching machine or by hand, where
required, on a site specific basis. Actual recommendations through test
plot studies for the requirements of mulch are made in the study
conducted by the Department of Range Science from Colorado State
University as shown in Exhibit 18.
CF&I Steel Corporation does not plan to utilize irrigation to enhance
revegetation of the disturbed area. However, monitoring of the
revegetation effort will be completed to determine if disease and pest
control measures are required. If it appears that revegetation efforts
are hampered due to pests and disease, the Soil Conservation Service or
Department of Range Science from Colorado State University will be
contacted to determine the best method for control .
Revegetation success will be measured utilizing the reference areas
which are reviewed in Section 2.04.10 of this application. Significant
vegetation studies have been conducted by CF&I Steel Corporation and are
shown in Exhibit 12, Vegetation Information. Discussion of the
comparison of the selected reference areas with the disturbed areas is
also reviewed in this Exhibit. Locations of the reference areas are
shown on the Vegetation Map (Map 11). The reference areas are currently
fenced to minimize disturbance due to mining activities and access by
domestic livestock.- Monitoring and sampling of the revegetation effort
and reference areas will be completed to determine the cover production
and density of vegetation in the reclaimed area as it relates with the
reference area.
During application and placement of the soil material to the regraded
surface, particular care will be taken to ensure that the soil material
is suitable for use as a plant growth medium. Testing of the soil
material after placement will be completed to determine the level of
2.05-33
