Revised 11/15/81
other associated equipment, will make possible the increased coal
recovery at the Maxwell Mine. When the Maxwell Mine is fully developed,
retreat mining of the development mains and submains will be completed
where possible. Particular care will be exercised to ensure that
subsidence of the surface is not caused in areas which are
environmentally sensitive or which may cause significant, irreparable
damage to necessary surface features such as the Purgatoire River and
associated alluvial valley floors.
The major equipment associated with the Maxwell Mine consists of
continuous miners. Other support equipment is required for coal
haulage, ventilation, and material and man transport in and out of the
mine. Table 10, Mining Equipment List, shows the anticipated equipment
which will be used during the life of the Maxwell Mine.
Operation of the Maxwell Mine for approximately 40 years from 1981
through 2020 will result in total life of mine coal production which is
not possible to accurately determine based on the fluctuation in demand
for the coal 's end use. Annual production throughout the remaining life
of the mine is generally expected to be approximately 500,000 tons of
coal per year.
Surface facilities which are associated with the underground operation
consist of facilities necessary for the processing and loading of the
coal into railroad cars for transport to CF&I ' s Pueblo steel operations.
In addition, other ancillary facilities consist of shops, warehouses,
administrative buildings, and bathhouses. Essential mine operation
facilities which are necessary for the safe operation of the mine
consist of ventilation shafts, ventilation fans, . escapeways, and
production and supply slopes to access the Maxwell coal seam. Control
of surface water in the surface facilities area is provided by ditching
and drop structures to sediment control structures for holding runoff
for settlement and/or treatment prior to . discharge. Mine water is
provided through a small holding pond and pump station located adjacent
2.05-2
