Revised 11/15/81
The coal processing waste banks which are being constructed at the
Maxwell Mine have been designed to ensure stability and are approved by
MSHA. A specific design of the coal processing waste bank is shown in
Figure 3, Coal Processing Waste Bank Section. The material is hauled
from the coal processing plant to the waste bank utilizing small end
dump trucks. The material is spread on the waste bank by crawler
tractors. Continued haulage across the tops of these structures and
spreading of the material causes the material to be compacted to ensure
that a stable structure is built. CF&I Steel Corporation has conducted
geotechnical studies which are shown in Exhibit 15, Geotechnical Study -
Coal Processing Waste Bank. The location of the coal processing waste
banks are shown on the Mine Plan Map (Map 3) . CF&I Steel Corporation
does not anticipate increasing the size of the coal processing waste
bank location during the permit term. Continued use of these facilities
and their relationship to the adjacent alluvial valley floor is reviewed
in Section 2.06 of this application.
Upon the completion of the mining operation at the Maxwell Mine, the
coal processing waste bank will be revegetated and reclaimed as
described in Section 2.05.4 of this application.
Ponds and Embankments
The general surface water and sediment control plan which is currently
being used at the Maxwell Mine consists of diversion ditches which route
runoff from the disturbed areas into two sediment control ponds. These
ponds were constructed during 1980 and are shown on the Mine Hydrology
Map (Map 9) and the Sediment and Surface Water Control Plan Map (Map
13). Because no additional areas are planned to be disturbed during the
term of the permit, no additional sediment control structures and
ditching or diversion structures are required during this term.
Calculations which have been completed for the design of these
structures are shown in Exhibit 16, Surface Water and Control Design
Data.
2.05-12
