Revised 11/15/81
2.04.7 Hydrology Description
Groundwater Information
A detailed investigation of the groundwater hydrology for the permit
area and adjacent area of the Maxwell Mine has been conducted for CF&I
Steel Corporation by Water, Waste, and Land, Limited. This report
discusses the location, quality, and quantity of water in the subsurface
of the permit area in detail , is shown in Exhibit 6, Hydrology and
Geology Information. This investigation indicates that very little
groundwater is present in the area which the Maxwell Mine operation is
located. Local drinking water supplies for isolated residents of the
area comes primarily from alluvial valley sources Isolated higher
production wells which supply irrigation water are also located in the
alluvium. Table 7, State Engineer' s Record of Water Wells, shows the
wells which are located within one mile of the Maxwell Mine and their
associated owners, permit numbers and yields. The locations of these
wells are shown on the Regional Hydrology Map (Map 8). A listing of
each individual well , its owner, use, and other pertinent information is
shown in Exhibit 8, Water Well Information. Quality of the subsurface
water has been determined at numerous locations shown on the Regional
Hydrology Map (Map 8). Analyses of the groundwater at these locations
are shown in Exhibit 9, Water Quality Analysis.
Surface Water Information
The surface water quality and quantity information has been developed
through a study by Water, Waste, and Land, Limited for CF&I Steel
Corporation. The report of the quality and quantity of water associated
with the permit and adjacent areas to the Maxwell Mine is found in
Exhibit 6, Hydrology and Geology Information. In addition, water
quality analyses are shown in Exhibit 9, Water Quality Analysis. All
surface waters in the Maxwell permit area and adjacent area are shown on
the Regional Hydrology Map (Map 8). Discharges of surface water at the
Maxwell Mine are shown on the Mine Hydrology Map (Map 9) . Quality of
water associated with both mine discharges and existing surface water is
shown in Exhibit 9, Water Quality Analysis.
2.04-8
