Revised 11/15/81
2.04.8 Climatological Information
The climatological information for the Maxwell Mine has been taken from
the U.S. Department of Commerce reporting stations located at Trinidad,
Colorado and North Lake, Colorado. Data collected from these two
locations are representative of the Maxwell permit area. The Trinidad
station is 6,030 feet above mean sea level and located at latitude 37'
10' , longitude 104° 29' . The North Lake station is approximately 8,800
feet above sea level and located at latitude 37' 13' , longitude 105'
03' . In addition, data from the FAA weather station located at the
Trinidad, Colorado Airport have been used.
The mean monthly precipitation for both the Trinidad and North Lake
reporting stations are shown on Tables 8 and 9, Climatological Data.
The average wind direction and velocity of the prevailing winds is ten
knots per hour from the southwest. Mean monthly temperature and
temperature ranges are shown in Tables 8 and 9, Climatological Data. In
addition, wind data from the Trinidad, Colorado Airport and Annual
Climatological Summary for 1970 are included in Exhibit 10,
Climatological Information.
2.04.9 Soils Resource Information
The area of the Maxwell Mine surface facilities and surface operations
was disturbed during construction of the facilities in 1976. Mapping
and sampling of the soil resources in this area had not been completed
prior to the disturbance. However, those areas which will be disturbed
during the next five years have been mapped and sampled to determine the
amount of the soil horizons that are available for removal . Mapping and
sampling of the soil horizons in areas which will be disturbed by the
surface mining activities has been conducted by the Soil Conservation
Service located in Trinidad, Colorado. Analyses of the various samples
shown on the Soils Map (Map 10) are located in Exhibit 11, Soils
Information. In addition, the description of each soil type which will
be disturbed is included in Exhibit 11. Locations of soil samples are
shown on the Soils Map (Map 10) .
