DESIGN SUMMARY
A gated 24-inch diameter outlet pipe (Ref. Sheet 2) will provide the principle means
for regulating the reservoir pool. To install the outlet conduit, the existing embankment will
be breached by excavating an open trench to elevation 10,680 feet, 45 feet below the
dam crest. The reservoir level below elevation 10,684 feet will be considered dead storage
and will probably not be released downstream, except during drought years or other
unusual conditions by pumping. The outlet has been sized to discharge at a rate of 24.5
cfs with 10 feet of head. The estimated average annual peak inflow to the reservoir is less
than 10 cfs. Outlet discharge calculations are presented in a subsequent section of this
report. The outlet conduit will be 24-inch, Class 5, reinforced concrete pipe placed upon
a reinforced concrete cradle. A 15" x 15" sluice gate with a handwheel and 1 %s-inch
encased stem will be used for regulation of the reservoir discharge. The sluice gate will
be located on the upstream end of the outlet pipe.
The existing emergency spillway is located at the south abutment of the dam. The
spillway is a 20-foot wide, open channel design with a concrete control section at elevation
10,717.5 feet, providing 7.5 feet of emergency freeboard. The spillway has a discharge
capacity of 1,240 cfs at the dam crest and is capable of safely passing the probable
maximum flood. Because the spillway is adequate for the water storage reservoir, no
improvements are proposed for the existing structure.
The existing dam is about 135 feet high, as measured from the dam crest to the
original ground surface. The dam crest is at elevation 10,725 feet. Tailings occupy
approximately 650 acre-feet of space, with the top of the tailing material at an elevation
of approximately 10,660 feet. Removal of all tailing material will restore the reservoir to
the original capacity of about 3,000 acre-feet. Climax has filed an application for an
absolute water right of 400 acre-feet and a conditional water right of 5,300 acre-feet.
Future enlargement of the dam and reservoir is considered a possibility. The outlet works
proposed here are considered incompatible with significant dam heightening.
3
