Other materials or procedures may be used with prior
authorization by the Engineer.
4.7 HANDLING AND STORAGE OF MATERIALS
4.7.1 REINFORCEMENT
Reinforcing steel shall be handled and stored in such manner as to
avoid distortion, excessive rusting, and objectionable coatings of
paint, oil, grease, dried mud, dried mortar or other materials. Bars
shall be stored so that each may be identified after bundles are
broken.
4.7.2 AGGREGATE
Aggregate shall be handled and stored in such manner as to
prevent segregation of sizes and to avoid the inclusion of dirt
and/or foreign materials in the concrete. Stockpiles shall be built
up in layers of uniform thickness and not in cone-shaped piles.
Material shall be removed from stockpiles in approximately
horizontal layers. While placing fine aggregate in storage piles,
care shall be exercised to prevent fines from being blown away.
Fine aggregate shall remain stockpiled at least 24 hours allowing
excess moisture to drain from freshly washed aggregates.
4.7.3 CEMENT
Cement in sacks or barrels shall be stored under a weather-tight
cover with the floor raised at least 0.5 foot above the ground.
Cement that has hardened or partially set shall be removed from
the site and not used.
