The purpose of this letter is to document the results of our meeting,
provide requested information and establish a schedule for the agreed upon action
items. It remains our goal to strictly comply with the terms of the Act and to minimize
the environmental impacts of our operations.
As the CLIMAX Mine has potential impact to three drainages, I will review the
results of our discussions concerning each drainage separately.
TENMILE DRAINAGE
I
CLIMAX personnel reviewed the history of groundwater investigations in the
Tenmile drainage and the geologic-hydrologic assumptions and conclusions drawn
from studies completed in 1984 under the direction of the Colorado Department of
Health. The 1984 work resulted in the installation of two groundwater monitoring wells
that have been monitored since 1987. Monitoring has shown no impact to the
groundwater in the Tenmile drainage basin. The Division agreed that historical
monitoring of this drainage was adequate and asked to review groundwater and
surface water monitoring results. Those results are attached.
EAGLE RIVER DRAINAGE
CLIMAX personnel summarized the geology/hydrology of the drainage basin,
noting the #4 dam project. Division staff agreed that groundwater is not present
below #4 dam due to the extremely shallow soil cover and the concrete cutoff wall at
Climax, Colorado 80429 Phone (719)486-2150 Telecopier Ext. 540
