5
deterioration from human-induced pollution where contamination has
occurred. It is important to note that it was not designed to prevent or
control naturally occurring pollution.
Purpose and Objectives for Climax and Henderson's Groundwater TR's
1. Characterize ground water flow conditions to provide an
understanding of physical movement of ground water within the area.
Based on ground water movement data, define the potentially affected
area.
2 . Characterize the ground water quality conditions to provide a basis
for evaluating the potential nature and extent of ground water
quality effects.
3 . Define hydrogeologic transport pathways to groundwater receptors and
to surface water and evaluate potential water quality effects at
these points.
Required Tasks to Meet Specified Objectives (some already done)
1. Characterize background water quality in all aquifers with potential
to be affected.
2 . Investigate and document discharges from mines, springs and seeps in
the potentially affected area including discharge rates and water
quality.
3 . Characterize the nature and extent of contamination in ground water
that may result in contaminant loading into surface water.
4. Identify all potentially affected ground water uses and users.
5. Characterize ground water/surface water interaction in the
potentially affected area.
6. Characterize ground water flow directions, hydraulic gradients,
hydraulic conductivity, and water quality in all potentially
affected aquifers.
Recommended Procedure (some already done)
1. A site description of the potentially affected area proposed for
characterization. Include location, study area boundaries and
justification, watershed description, location and description of
classified stream segments, topography, land and water use, mining
history, climate, and a description of terrestrial and aquatic
ecosystems.
2 . Present a proposal for field reconnaissance and water sampling
activities associated with mine discharge and spring and seep
