This report proposes two new locations for monitoring
groundwater in the Tenmile Creek Watershed . This
report is submitted in fulfillment of requirement
16 .b. , of the Agreement , Stipulation , and Order cover-
ing Case No . 85-11 .
In this document , the Climax Molybdenum Company is
referenced as the "Company" . The Water Quality Divis-
ion is designated as the "Division" .
The Company currently has a reliable understanding of
the groundwater characteristics throughout the Tenmile
watershed . This has been detailed to the Division in
two previous reports (Austermann , 1984 , Sacrison, et
al . , 1985 ) . These reports present the bulk of the
information requested by the Colorado Wastewater Dis-
charge Permit System No . CO-0000248 . This document
addresses the remaining topics included all or in part
under paragraphs A.4 .b. and A.4 .c . (page 7 of Part I,
Broetzman , 1983) .
Proposal
The enclosed map , G.E. Drawing 15-15 , shows the two
proposed well sites . This map references 13-27b , which
is Figure 2 in the 1985 report to the Division. These
locations are selected to provide representative
groundwater data from the alluvium and alluvial fan
deposits . A prime concern has been year-round access .
These sites provide that . An additional concern is to
minimize the environmental disturance of the area below
the tails impoundments .
Site 1 is just downstream from the retention pond .
Site 2 is on a flat , dry shelf which is also easily
accessible from the highway . Both have sufficient room
for drill and subsequent snow removal equipment . Snow
can easily be pushed away from both sites , without
obstructing other facilities or streamflow itself .
Climax-affected groundwater will be readily detected at
Site 1 . The valley is narrow, with upvalley ground-
water restricted to the targeted area.
Site 2 provides a check on groundwater behavior farther
downstream. It will reflect groundwater quality from
the sedimentary-bedrock regime to the west of the Mos-
quito Fault .
Rotary drilling will be used to place the holes . This
