Mine water inflow was collected in a sump and discharged from
the mine by pumping. Table 3 presents average daily discharge from the
mines (calculated from daily pump records and averaged for each month.
Figures 3 and 4 graphically displays this hydrograph for 1987 and 1988 .
Average daily discharge ranged from 31 , 014 gallons per day (gpd) during
mid January 1987 to 444,064 gpd during February 1988 . Extremes in
average daily discharge are usually explained by pump efficiency since
flow measurements are based on pump hours . As indicated, a major flow
increase was observed in December 1987 . This was a result of increased
flow encountered during mine development activities during that period.
As indicated, the inflow increased during January and February 1988 and
then decreased throughout the remainder of 1988 .
When relating calculated discharge to the inflow results,
correlation of inflow to discharge is relatively close . An inflow of
160 gpm relates to 230, 400 gpd. Pump records are near this inflow
during November 1988 when the inflow study was conducted (Table 3 ) .
New Elk Mine
At the New Elk Mine, thirteen sources identified in the 1983
mine inflow survey were examined. No additional sources were found
other than those thirteen, of which three were dry. Table 4 presents
the location, probable water source and estimated gallons per minute
(gpm) for each of these sources. Major sources were measured
volumetrically while seepage and weeping faces were estimated. A total
of 123 gpm inflow was estimated. Of that amount, approximately 109 gpm
is being generated from mined out areas totaling approximately 2,800
acres (sources 3, 4 , 5 , 8 , 9 , 10, 11 , 12 and 13) .
Representative water quality of the inflow was measured .
Table 5 presents the temperature, conductivity and pH of each source.
Quality of those sources seeping from gob or abandoned mine areas was
higher in temperature and conductivity than those areas of current
workings. Quality ranged from 762 to 3, 540 umhos conductivity, 9.9 to
-64-
