SPRING AND SEEP SURVEY
INTRODUCTION
Following the preliminary spring and seep survey conducted in
February 1984 using aerial photographs, field verification and
sampling in May 1984, WFC initiated a monitoring program of the
springs and seeps within a 1 mile area of the New Elk and Golden
Eagle permit boundaries. Of the 21 springs and seeps identified,
9 fell within this area and were verified. This report presents
the results of the monitoring at these 9 locations during the 1984
growing season (May through October) , August 1985, 1986, 1987,
1988, and 1989 . Following review of the 1985 data, frequency of
monitoring springs and seeps was limited to once per growing season
during the month of August. Additional springs and seeps were
monitored during 1988 and 1989 to the north and east of the Golden
Eagle permit area to assess these resources for incorporation into
a permit area expansion. Springs and seeps in Cherry, Alamosito,
Lopez, Wet, Pratt and Sawmill Canyons were identified and also
monitored in August. Also presented, is an assessment of the
significance of the springs and seeps on surface flows, irrigation
practices, livestock watering, wildlife watering, and domestic use.
METHODS
During the monitoring period each location was visited.
Measurements of pH, conductivity and temperature were made using a
Hydro Lab Model 4000 field sampling kit. Flow of each spring and
seep was visually estimated.
RESULTS
Results of the preliminary inventory and locations of all
springs and seeps are presented in Table 1 and Figure 1. Data for
each location monitored is presented in Tables 2 through 19 .
-76-
